Janusz Kaminski has won two Best Cinematography Oscars for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.
In this video, he speaks at the AFI’s Harold Lloyd Master Seminar about the art of cinematography.
Kaminski grew up in Poland, but when martial law was imposed in 1981 he emigrated to the United States.
Once there in Chicago he followed his childhood love of movies and chose to study film.
Kaminski began his career in Hollywood making B-movies for Roger Corman.
He fine tuned his already evident gifts in Corman’s film factory until 1993 when he was fortunate to be discovered by Steven Spielberg who spotted him as an up and coming cinematographer. Kaminski spent the next ten years working with Spielberg on a stunning list of films. He earned many awards including his fourth Academy Award nomination for his work on “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” (2007) which followed his break from Spielberg. [click to continue…]
